Turnitin Guidelines & Scoring Rules
Everything you need to know about report formats, the Turnitin asterisk (*), word count requirements, and safe checking standards.
Understanding Non-Repository AI & Similarity Scores
turniitin.vip ensures your submissions are evaluated against billions of web pages and scholarly articles without ever storing your manuscript in the public repository database.
The Asterisk (*) Indicator Explained
When you receive your AI Writing Report, you may notice an asterisk (*) instead of a specific percentage (e.g., 5% or 12%). This is standard, intentional Turnitin functionality designed to protect students from false positives:
Turnitin suppresses percentages below 20% to account for natural sentence variation. Scores here are marked with (*) and indicate negligible AI probability.
Turnitin AI models require at least 300 qualifying words of continuous English prose. Below 300 words, statistical confidence is insufficient, and an (*) is returned.
When AI probability reaches or exceeds 20%, Turnitin displays the exact calculated percentage along with sentence-by-sentence cyan highlights in your report.
📑 Dual Report Deliverables
Report 1: Similarity (Plagiarism)
Compares your text against the world’s largest academic repository, including billions of indexed web pages, journal articles, books, and publications.
- ✓ Full overall similarity index (%)
- ✓ Color-coded matched text passages
- ✓ Complete source references and citations
Report 2: AI Writing Detection
Analyzes sentence structure, perplexity, and burstiness to identify text potentially generated by Large Language Models (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, GPT-4).
- ✓ Overall AI writing percentage indicator
- ✓ Cyan highlights on flagged AI sentences
- ✓ Turnitin Asterisk statistical protection
Word Count Guidelines
For complete dual reporting, submit documents between 300 and 30,000 words. Files under 300 words receive the Similarity Report, while the AI score will display an asterisk.
File Formats & Text Quality
We accept Microsoft Word (.docx) and PDF (.pdf) files up to 50MB. Ensure your PDF contains selectable text (not scanned images).
Language Calibration
Turnitin's AI detector is calibrated specifically on English academic prose. Non-English papers will still receive complete Plagiarism / Similarity analysis.
100% No-Repository Guarantee
All checks run in non-repository mode. Your paper is never stored in Turnitin's global database, preventing self-plagiarism flags upon class submission.
